Mission Statement

University of Texas Cycling (Texas Cycling) promotes interest in cycling and racing among the UT student body and the Austin community as a whole. We seek to give members the opportunity to learn and compete in the life long sport of cycling. We also foster the development of leadership skills, camaraderie, and a sense of community responsibility that will be carried on for life. Our team works to continue a winning tradition while adhering to the highest standards of conduct and sportsmanship set forth by The University and our sponsors.

Texas Cycling

Texas Cycling was founded in 1978 and exists as a both a registered student organization and a competitive sports club at The University of Texas at Austin. To fulfill our mission of promoting cycling and facilitating rider development Texas Cycling participates in and sponsors a broad range of cycling and health related activities. Most visibly, are our men’s and women’s competitive teams made up of riders of all skill levels — beginner to semi-pro. Beyond racing, the club holds daily training and recreational rides, participates in and sponsors cycling related community projects and provides UT students with an opportunity to develop leadership skills while involved with the organization.

The Team

The University of Texas Cycling Team competes against other colleges and universities under the national governance of the National Collegiate Cycling Association and the United States Cycling Federation in the disciplines of Road, Mountain Biking, Track and Cyclocross. Our conference, the South Central Collegiate Cycling Conference includes, in addition to ourselves, Texas A&M, North Texas, Texas Tech, Texas State, Baylor and Midwestern State. In the past we have won six National Titles on the road and track, and produced All-American cyclists like Paul Read and Ian Dille. Collegiate cycling offers three categories of men’s competition and two of women’s, allowing riders of all levels and skill to participate. Texas Cycling supports our cyclists by paying for race fees and travel expenses, securing sponsorships for free and discounted merchandise and providing coaching and other training resources to facilitate rider development.

The Community

We believe, as both cyclists and students of The University of Texas, that we have a responsibility to give back to the community and the sport of cycling. In the past year we raised funds for hurricane Katrina Relief and to help prevent child abuse through a pair of roll-a-thons. Texas Cycling has also conducted several bicycle rodeos. These clinics are a fun way for the club members to teach bicycle safety to Austin area children. Members have also represented Texas Cycling in charity races and events like the Ride for The Roses and MS150. In the future we hope to participate in the Keep Austin Beautiful Adopt-a-Street program to help keep our streets clean for all those who use them.

Membership

  • Eligibility. All students, faculty and staff at The University of Texas at Austin are eligible to join Texas Cycling at the club level. You do need a suitable road or mountain bike and basic equipment to join. If you’re looking for a bike and need advice please email John Hatlelid or come to a meeting and we will do our best to help you out. In order to race, you must be a full time undergraduate (12 hours) or graduate student (9 hours*). Because cycling is not an NCAA sport, there are no eligibility limitations on racing besides full time status as a student.
  • Dues. Dues are $200/year for active racing members and $25/semester for club members. A team kit is included with team member dues.
  • Obligations. All members are required to attend monthly club meetings held on the first Monday of each month at which important announcements and club business — rosters, merchandise orders, pay dues, etc. — will take place. All members are also required to volunteer at events Texas Cycling either sponsors or participates in. These are typically half-day weekend events and you may pick when you would like to help out.
  • Benefits. Because our club is sponsored by Rec Sports and other local sponsors, members receive far more back than what they pay in dues. All members may purchase team clothing at about half of what a similar jersey would sell for in stores. We also receive discounts on Specialized brand bikes and in store merchandise from Bicycle Sport Shop. Once a month, we have pizza “get-togethers” at Austin’s Pizza on Guadalupe with free pizza for members. For those racing, all of your race fees, travel and accommodations for collegiate races are paid for, allowing you to race for incredibly cheap.
  • How to Join. You may join anytime during the school year but we prefer for you to do at the beginning of the Fall and Spring semesters at our info sessions. If you missed those, you may join at any one of our monthly club meetings, pizza meetings or you can email Chris Collins for more info. You must pay your dues and complete some paperwork for us and Rec Sports in order to join. In the mean time, sign up for our listserv through the website for ride and club announcements and feel free to join us on any rides.
